Weight Loss – Exercise Less, Lose More Body Fat?

Current guidelines recommend 60 minutes of exercise a day for weight loss and increasing our fitness. Current research suggests when it comes to losing body fat and getting in shape, shorter periods of exercise may actually be better.

American researchers at the University of Copenhagen have found that 30 minutes of rigorous exercise can be just as effective as one hour when it comes to losing

The team at the university studied 60 overweight, healthy men between the ages of 20 and 40 years who’s aim was weight loss.

  • 21 men were asked to take 30 minutes of daily exercise.
  • 21 one were asked to take 60 minutes of daily exercise.
  • 18 were used as a control group and remained sedentary.

The results showed that exercising for 30 minutes was sufficient to promote loss of body fat, weight loss and improving health.

Most people would find this surprising as, you would think that doing more would give better results but apparently not.

The men who got active for 30 minutes daily burned 300 kcal per session and lost 3.6 kilograms in 13 weeks.  Those who exercised for an hour a day burned 600 kcal and lost 2.7 kilos, according to the published research.

The study also showed that the men who did 30 minutes of daily exercise were more motivated and were more active throughout the day. The men who exercised for 60 minutes consumed more calories throughout the day and were less active so therefore lost less weight than expected.

This study shows that engaging in endurance training for a reduction in body fat doesn’t have to be demanding.  This means that for some people less can be more.

Other studies and individual people are now starting to get similar results. People are saying that doing 30 minutes of exercise motivates them to continue. This shows that for some the less is more method seems to work.
