Amazing Story Of Strength And Determination
Press Release for client Mike Ransom
A former Telford lecturer who underwent life saving brain surgery almost two years ago to prevent him from having severe epileptic fits is now preparing to have part of his skull reconstructed.
Mike Ransom will undergo an operation at the end of this month (April) where an inflated balloon will be fitted inside his head.
The balloon will help stretch the skin so that a titanium plate can be fitted inside during a second operation in September to start rebuilding his skull.
The 53-year-old, who lives in Madeley, Telford, has been waiting several months for the operation but has only recently been deemed well enough by doctors to undergo further major surgery.
It follows substantial rehabilitation and the help of Telford personal trainer and physio Stuart Henderson, of Idea Fitness.
Mr Ransom, who has suffered with epilepsy since the age of seven, had part of his skull and brain removed in December 2013 in a life-saving operation.
His wife Tracey said: “It has been a long and difficult few years.
“Mike was always able to control his epilepsy with tablets and he had a full life but for some reason in 2007 everything went wrong and Mike started having frequent epileptic seizures.
“He suffered bruises and on one occasion a broken arm as a result of the fits.
“They seem to get worse and worse over time and on some days he was having seizures every three to five minutes.
“He was in and out of hospital but it came to a point where he was bed bound because that was the safest place for him.
“At the time we thought it was just a glitch and that Mike would get better but that wasn’t to be and he eventually got referred to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London where he underwent a six hour operation to remove part of the brain that was causing the seizures.”
Mr Ransom, who previously lectured in cooking at Telford College of Arts and Technology, remained in hospital in London for three months following the operation before eventually being transferred to Moseley Hall Hospital in Birmingham for rehabilitation.
“As a result of the operation Mike’s speech was affected and he lost the use of his right arm,” explained Mrs Ransom.
“His core strength stability was also severely affected which meant he was unable to stand or walk.
“He had some initial physiotherapy which helped but after a few months I decided to look for a personal trainer who could help Mike and I was so lucky to come across Stuart Henderson, of Ideal Fitness.
“Stuart has been working with Mike now for the last 12 months and Mike is a completely different person.
“He is able to lift light weights, is walking and even had a pair of boxing gloves on the other week for the first time.
“Stuart has been a lifesaver. He has been out every week to see Mike and worked really hard with him. Whilst Mike would have eventually been fit enough for this next operation to repair his skull without Stuart his recovery would have “We owe him a great deal and cannot thank him enough.
“It’s been a frightening few years and we honestly thought Mike would never regain use of his arm or be able to walk again so it just goes to show what hard work can achieve.
“Mike is now starting to gain control of his life and he hasn’t had a single seizure since the operation which is just fantastic but we know we still have a long way to go.
“Mike’s speech is still not good and on some days he has difficulty balancing to walk. The next couple of operations will set Mike back a bit so we hope to be able to continue working with Stuart for at least another 12 months or so.”
Mr Henderson, who was unable to walk himself for several months after breaking his lower back in a car accident seven years ago, said Mike had been an inspiration over the past few months.
He said: “When I first met Mike he couldn’t even stand and whilst it has been slow progress Mike has really improved. It’s still early days and he has a long way to go but he works very hard and I’m extremely proud of him.
“he has been waiting for this operation for some time and will really help to improve his quality of life further.”
Mr Henderson, who operates his personal training business from the Business Development Centre at Stafford Park, Telford, specialises in rehabilitation and has an extensive portfolio of personal training related qualifications.
He is also an expert in endurance training, speed training, weight loss and diabetes management and outdoor fitness.
Ideal Fitness also provides corporate first aid training courses and corporate health and wellbeing packages.

The programme gave me the most amazing results
Lee needed a push with his own training after, going to the gym and finding he was not getting the results he wanted. So after 2 years of trying and going nowhere, Lee decided to invest in an Ideal Fitness programme he could take to the gym and do himself but still have the support, encouragement and advice from an expert in body transformation at Ideal Fitness when he needed it. The results are amazing. Lee tells you exactly why he invested and what he gained from investing.

Stuart continues to keep the training fun and varied!
I originally contacted Ideal Fitness to improve my endurance fitness in the run up to a Triathlon with the goal of completing the event in sub 2.40. Stuart devised a program outside of my normal training methods that introduced explosive speed and strength work whilst advising on nutrition, that was almost 12 months ago and four Triathlons later Stuart continues to keep the training fun and varied whilst ensuring we achieve our quarterly goals. Although the training is hard the results soon become clear to see with the weight loss and body toning an added benefit.
First Rate Training
I lead a very busy life and Stuart fits in around my work schedule and visits me at my home so that I do not have to spend time travelling to the gym. The results have been very impressive. As well as helping me to lose weight by advising me on food choices the exercise regime has had a remarkable effect upon my upper body strength, which has been something I have struggled with before. Stuart has also shown me some relaxation techniques to enable me to deal with the effects of a stressful job. As well as a new body I am now developing a more relaxed mind.

Enthusiastic, motivated and very professional
When our twins turned 18 months old, I decided it was time for me to get myself back into shape. As I am not someone who has the discipline or motivation required to go to a gym, finding Stuart was the best possible solution to suit my lifestyle. In 6 months, Stuart has managed not only to make me get fitter, but has somehow made me change my attitude towards exercise and general wellbeing. Stuart is enthusiastic, motivated and very professional.
He always takes into account a person’s particular needs and builds a routine to suit accordingly. I came off my pain and anti depressants
So What Do I Do Now?
Have you ever said that to yourself because all the doctors and medical specialists have told you they can't help you?
Take my client Simon who was told just that by the NHS. He was in so much pain because of his spinal degeneration and was taking copious amounts of pain killers and anti-depressants. But within 3 weeks he was off his meds, felt brighter mentally and was able to start living.
But you know what it wasn't just Simon it was affecting, his whole family was affected, they had their dad and husband back. Simon will always have the condition but at least now he has a life to live
I myself have been through it when I broke my own back but like Simon I took control and I started helping others in a similar situation
Are you living with a problem that you feel there just has to be more out there to help the condition improve? Is this problem taking away your life? Do you want it back?
Lets see what can be done because if you don't you will always be living with the question "So What Do I Do Now?"
I have lost fat and inches and I am much more comfortable with my shape!
What made you decide you wanted/needed to start a program?
I started a new job in Autumn 2010 and began working really long hours including most evenings and at least one day at the weekend. I also have to stay away from home in hotels a lot, and within a year put on almost a stone in weight. When I had any free time I couldn’t find the motivation to go to the gym or even out for a jog and exercise fell right to the bottom of my list of priorities. Eventually I decided enough was enough and that a personal trainer might just fit my hectic lifestyle and provide me with the motivation I was struggling to generate myself.
What results have you achieved since starting your program?
I can do it with both legs in the air! Can I put that Stuart? What that means is in the beginning, I was struggling to do even leg raises with both legs at the same time, and now (metaphorically speaking of course) I could do it standing on my head. It’s such an achievement, Stuart even wrote it in my birthday card this year! On a more serious note, I have lost fat and inches and I am much more comfortable with my shape. There is still some way to go, but I’m much fitter, toned, and tend to choose healthier food options – not least because I know I’ll be challenged on it if I don’t! The workouts are much more intense and focussed now than when I first started and I understand my body and what I am capable of achieving a great deal more.
What do you like best about your program / having a trainer?
There is so much I love about having a Stuart, but most of all, it takes the difficulty out of motivating myself because I book a session and don’t allow myself to cancel it. It means that regardless of whether or not I feel like it, I’m going to be working out when Stuart turns up at my house. There are many other things too – I can fit it around my work with minimal disruption; I really enjoy the variety of workouts that we do and I love the fact that I have a say as to what we focus on and what equipment we use. It is also great having someone to account to after decadent holidays! It makes me think twice about the extra cocktail I don’t really need.
What would you say to someone on the fence about joining an Ideal Fitness personal training program?
I would say “what have you got to lose?” I wouldn’t be where I am and with the body confidence I have now without personal training. I’d probably be heavier, unfit and wondering why I hadn’t made the change sooner. For some people, personal training can be about focussed training for an event, or improving on an already good fitness base. For me however, the great thing about personal training is that regardless of whether you have one session a week or three, it signals a change in attitude and approach to fitness and puts you on the right track if you’re having difficulty doing that yourself like I was. Thanks Stuart!
I have a very busy life, having to travel quite alot with my job and staying in hotels. The programme from Ideal Fitness showed me how I can fit in exercise and healthy nutrition even when I thought it was impossible.
The results just speak for themselves. I have more energy, I feel fantastic and I am now able to wear some of the clothes that I have wanted for such a long time.
